Grandfather effects in Laoling disyllabic tone sandhi

چکیده
In Optimality Theory, grandfather effects refer to the phenomena in which a structure that already exist input is allowed surface while same derived (i.e. not input) forbidden. Most studies on this issue focus segmental processes, and only few tonal processes. This study presents data of Laoling regular disyllabic tone sandhi, demonstrates grandfathering effect where some tones are non-derived contexts but banned contexts. We propose constraint-based analysis adopting Comparative Markedness (McCarthy 2003) constraints.

The microprosodics of tone sandhi in shanghai disyllabic compounds
This paper examines the F0 variations during tone sandhi due to various prosodic factors such as phonation type, length, stress and pitch height. It will be shown that the F0 height and shape of the second syllable (S2) in disyllabic words are determined by the interaction of four conditions: the intervocalic consonant (C2) voicing, the S2 Truncation, the F0 height of S1, and stress assignment.
متن کاملThe productivity of variable disyllabic tone sandhi in Tianjin Chinese
Tianjin Chinese has one of the more complex tone sandhi systems in Northern Chinese dialects. Due to its close contact with Standard Chinese, many of its tone sandhi patterns are also variable. This article first reports a detailed acoustic study of tone sandhi patterns in both real lexical items and novel words in Tianjin. The data were collected from 48 speakers of Tianjin, who were instructe...
متن کامل"Defying Explanation"? - Accounting for Tones in Wenzhou Dialect Disyllabic Lexical Tone Sandhi
Auditory and acoustic descriptions and hermeneutic tonological analysis are presented for the lexical tone sandhi in two subsets of disyllabic tonal combinations in the Southern Wu dialect of Wenzhou. The effects of stress are shown to be an important factor in accounting for the tones in one of the combinations.
متن کاملTopics in Tone 3 Sandhi
Although Chen’s [1] Minimal Rhythmic Units analysis and Duanmu’s [2] Metrical Feet analysis can effectively account for a wide range of Tone 3 Sandhi (T3S) phenomena in Mandarin Chinese, the T3S patterns of sentences with a Topic phrase (TP sentences) were not discussed in their works. Therefore, this study intends to critically examine the power of prediction of those analyses by analyzing the...
متن کاملNeutralization in Taiwanese Tone Sandhi
Taiwanese tone sandhi, although a phrase-level pattern, has been argued to be essentially lexicalized. We thus expected it to be phonetically categorical and insensitive to pragmatic context. To test these predictions, we had native speakers read aloud pairs of sentences identical except for morphemes expected to be neutralized by tone sandhi, both across and within prosodic positions. Speakers...
